FC Metalurh has its roots in the team FC Antratsyt Kirovske. After a disappointing first season in the independent Ukraine, in the 1993 season Antratsyt placed third in the Third League and was promoted to the Druha Liha. Once in the Druha Liha the club relocated to Shahtarsk and changed its name to FC Medita Shahtarsk. A couple of years later the club was reorganized and renamed FC Metalurh Donetsk. After placing second in its league the club gained the promotion to Persha Liha, which Metalurh won in 1997.

In Ukrainian Premier League club has been playing since 1997/98. FC Metalurh is the Bronze medalist of the Ukrainian Championship in 2002, 2003, 2005.
